Premier League: The Probable Candidates for the Drop

The 2024-25 Premier League campaign is slowly coming to an end, as we’re 23 matchdays in. Because Liverpool are running away from the chasing pack, football fans might focus more on the intensifying relegation battle in the next few weeks.

Because of their poor runs of Premier League 2025 results, Southampton, Ipswich Town, and Wolves are entrenched in the drop zone, while Leicester City are not far behind despite being the 17th seed. 16th-seed Everton and 15th-placed Tottenham could join them too if they become complacent.

Going back to the Championship does not bode well for these teams, not only from a competitive standpoint but also from a financial perspective. Time is ticking for these teams to put up a run to maintain their English top-flight status.

Southampton

With only one win, three draws, and 19 losses after the first 23 matchdays, Southampton need a miracle to stay in the Premier League next season. Their only Premier League victory was a 1-0 result against Everton at St. Mary’s Stadium last November, as Adam Armstrong scored the matchwinner in the 85th minute.

Southampton have the worst offence and defence in the league, conceding 53 goals while scoring only 19 times. No player of theirs have scored more than two league goals this season, with Joe Aribo, Cameron Archer, Adam Armstrong, Tyler Dibling, and Jan Bednarek being the team’s joint-top scorers. Dibling has arguably been the team’s brightest spot, and several teams will knock at his door once the Saints get relegated.

After losing 5-0 to Tottenham last December 16, the Saints sacked Russell Martin and replaced him with Ivan Juric. However, not much has changed under Juric, although the Southampton front office is keen to keep him at the head coaching helm for at least one more year.

Ipswich Town

Premier League: Ipswich Town are winless in four consecutive games to start the new calendar year
Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna shouts from the touchline during a Premier League match against Chelsea

Ipswich Town are the 19th seed in the table with 16 points. The Tractor Boys had a decent start to the 2024-25 campaign, but they’re in a precarious position because they’re winless in four consecutive games to start the new calendar year. During their three-game losing streak, Ipswich Town conceded 12 goals against Brighton, Manchester City, and Liverpool while scoring only one goal.

Because their goals dried up, Ipswich Town made moves to reinforce their attack. They bought Jaden Philogene from Aston Villa and loaned Julio Enciso from Brighton. These two youngsters will give their top scorer, Liam Delap, the help he needs in the final third. Delap already has eight league goals this term. Besides Delap, Sam Morsy has been an integral cog for the Tractor Boys’ campaign, forming a viable midfield partnership with Kalvin Phillips.

The SBOTOP Premier League 2025 odds favour Ipswich Town to beat Southampton this Saturday, which should put them above the relegation zone.

Wolves

The Wolves were at the bottom of the Premier League standings after going winless in the first eight matchdays, and the only thing that has changed for them is their manager. The Wolves sacked Gary O’Neil last December following a 2-1 loss against Ipswich Town. Vitor Pereira took the vacant head coaching position, and 40 days in, he is still finding his feet in the Premier League.

Pereira’s side is 18th in the table with 16 points, level with Ipswich Town. Since beating Manchester United 2-0 before the New Year, the Wolves have gone winless in their last four games. They will take on Aston Villa in their next Premier League match, and they won’t have one of their top players, as Joao Gomes was sent off against Arsenal.

Matheus Cunha, Jorgen Strand Larsen, and Rayan Ait-Nouri have been the Wolves’ top players, combining for 20 league goals and 11 assists this year. If they get relegated at the end of the season, expect rival teams to try and poach each one of them this summer.

The Wolves haven’t done much so far in the winter transfer window, but Pereira is confident his team will land signings before the February 3 deadline. As things stand, the Wolves need a midfielder and a centre-back to reinforce their lacklustre backline.

Leicester City

Leicester City are the 17th seed in the standings, but they only lead by one point over Wolves and Ipswich Town. The Foxes were on an eight-game winless run with Ruud van Nistelrooy in charge, although they secured a much-needed 2-1 victory over the freefalling Spurs last Sunday.

The Foxes’ fate is resting on Jamie Vardy’s broad shoulders. The evergreen striker leads the team with seven league goals and three assists, and Leicester City cannot afford to see his form drop off throughout the rest of the season.
