Serie A: Milan Out to End Inter’s Perfect Start in the Derby

AC Milan vs Inter Milan

The city of Milan will be divided once again as AC Milan and Inter clash for the first Derby della Madonnina of the new Serie A season.

Inter are flying high atop the table after winning their first three matches under new manager Antonio Conte.

However, Milan have won two games on the bounce themselves and will be all too eager to be the first team to take points from their bitter rivals this season.

SBOBET Serie A have already been treated to one exciting derby this season with Roma’s 1-1 draw against Lazio. And with the talent on display for both sides, the Milan derby has the potential to be just as entertaining.

Talking Points

Milan getting good results, but not performances

Marco Giampaolo didn’t have the best start to his tenure as AC Milan manager after he lost 1-0 to Udinese in the opening weekend of the season. But since then, Milan have picked up a couple of important results.

They immediately bounced back with a 1-0 win at home to Brescia the following week and returned from the international break to score another 1-0 win away to Verona.

Krzystof Piatek, last year’s breakout star and leading scorer with 22 goals, finally got off the mark for the season with a 68th-minute penalty against Verona.

The statistics indicate Milan dominated both matches. They had the lion’s share of possession in both of their wins, getting 63 per cent against Brescia and a whopping 70 per cent against Verona. Moreover, they’ve created a number of shots from open play.

However, those performances were not as impressive as the statistics would make them seem. For all of their possession, they struggled to produce good opportunities on goal. They couldn’t even manage to do so while playing against 10 men for nearly 70 minutes against Verona.

Giampaolo still hasn’t found a suitable midfield combination to play his preferred diamond formation,  which has hurt them in attack. Meanwhile, Piatek also hasn’t looked all that effective in the new system.

On the bright side, though, their centre-back partnership of Alessio Romagnoli and Mateo Musacchio has performed well to start the season. With the attack still finding its feet, the two defenders will be crucial to Milan’s success in the derby.

Conte making his mark right away

The start of Antonio Conte’s reign at Inter has been a promising one. The Nerazzurri ‘s Serie A 2019 results have seen them claim three wins out of three with just one goal conceded. After thrashing Lecce 4-0, they beat Cagliari 2-1 away and also edged out Udinese 1-0 at home.

Romelu Lukaku will try to replicate Inter’s victory in their last Serie A away derby against AC Milan
Romelu Lukaku already scored 2 goals in his 3 matches at Inter Milan

New signings Romelu Lukaku and Stefano Sensi have started the season in fine form with two goals apiece. Conte also has the likes of Lautaro Martinez — who scored a hat-trick against Mexico during the international break — and Alexis Sanchez to call upon in attack.

Although, Conte and Inter hit their first snag of the young season against Slavia Prague in their Champions League opener. They needed a Nicola Barella equaliser in stoppage time to avoid an embarrassing home defeat to one of the tournament’s minnows.

But that disappointing performance could potentially serve as a wake-up call for Conte and his team ahead of the derby. Conte is a proven tactical mastermind and should have his squad set up well for the derby after their slight setback in Europe.

Conte already has the Inter defence looking steady like his title-winning Juventus and Chelsea sides, which is a promising development. And with Milan’s current attacking woes, Inter should fancy their chances of keeping their rivals from creating dangerous scoring opportunities.

History

Milan vs Inter is one of the most storied rivalries in European football. The two city rivals have faced off 223 times in total. Inter currently hold the slight edge with 80 wins to Milan’s 76, while there have been 67 draws.

Inter have had the upper hand in this matchup in recent years. They’ve gone unbeaten in their last six Serie A meetings (three wins, three draws). They also did the double over Milan last season for the first time in seven years.

Mauro Icardi — who was sent to Paris Saint-German during the transfer window — scored a stoppage-time winner in their first meeting last season. Inter will miss the Argentine, who loved scoring in the derby. He’d scored five goals in his last five Serie A matches against Milan.

Betting Tip

??
AC Milan vs Inter Milan Under 2.25 Goals @ 2.00
September 22, 02:45 (GMT+8)

The Serie A odds slightly favour Inter, who are 2.36 to win on the 1X2 market, while Milan are 3.15 and the draw is 3.05.

While Inter have gotten the better of their rivals in recent years and have had a good start to the season, there’s still a very good chance Milan can pick up a positive result.

That’s why I’m going with the over under market, specifically Under 2.25 goals. Both teams have conceded just one goal apiece this season, and Milan haven’t looked particularly convincing in attack. I predict a cagey, low-scoring affair between the two rivals in the derby.
